€ 500 MILLION AGREEMENT TO BUILD THE “QUEEN ELIZABETH”
10 October 2007
Fincantieri and Cunard Line (Carnival Group) have reached an agreement to build a new super-luxury cruise ship of 92,000 gross tonnes, worth approximately 500 million euros. Following the approval of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, the new vessel will be named the “Queen Elizabeth”.
Cunard Line, a well-established British shipping company, boasts a glorious tradition dating back almost 170 years providing transatlantic services with liners whose names are written in the history of merchant shipping.
The “Queen Elizabeth” will be the second largest ship ordered to date by Cunard following the “Queen Mary 2”. She will have a passenger capacity of 2,092 and will be built at Monfalcone shipyard for delivery in autumn 2010.
The vessel, whose fortunate guests will enjoy the highest standards of comfort, will reflect the excellence which has long been the hallmark of Cunard ships, world famous for their black hulls, white superstructures and red funnel.
As previously announced, at the end of November in Venice, Marghera shipyard, Fincantieri will deliver to Cunard the “Queen Victoria”, 90,000 gross tonnes, with a passenger capacity of 2,000 and a crew of 900.
Since 1990 Fincantieri has built 41 cruise ships. The “Queen Elizabeth” takes the number of ships under construction or on which building is set to start at the shipyards of Monfalcone, Marghera, Sestri Ponente and Ancona to 16, equivalent to a market share of over 40%. These 57 ships have brought Fincantieri revenues, expressed at today’s value, of over 23 billion dollars.
Commenting on this latest commercial success, the Chief Executive Officer of Fincantieri, Giuseppe Bono, said: «This agreement confirms our world leadership in a sector which has strong growth prospects, and in which, since the beginning of the year, we have gained orders for 8 cruise ships, including 2 options.»
