Fincantieri Group: Fincantieri Infrastructure Opere Marittime and WSense sign an agreement for the integration of advanced underwater monitoring and communication technologies in maritime infrastructures

11 December 2025

Trieste/Milan, December 11, 2025 – Fincantieri, through its subsidiary Fincantieri Infrastructure Opere Marittime, and WSense, a scale-up specializing in the development of technologies based on underwater communication protocols and advanced environmental and structural monitoring systems, have signed a collaboration agreement - signed by the CEO of Fincantieri Infrastructure Opere Marittime, Giorgio Bellipanni, and by the CEO of WSense, Chiara Petrioli - aimed at integrating, into projects of common strategic interest, the most advanced technical solutions and equipment currently available in the sector.

The agreement provides for the adoption, in major maritime and port infrastructures, of WSense technologies to collect reliable real-time, continuous data on various classes of seabed and water column parameters: current intensity and direction, water quality and turbidity, biodiversity, underwater noise, and even the stability of structural elements. These capabilities enable the Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) and the creation of advanced monitoring and early-warning systems, essential for strengthening safety, predictability, and control in port activities such as dredging, breakwaters, and protective structures.

The partnership is also part of a shared path to promote environmental sustainability, through tools designed to monitor the impact of infrastructures on surrounding ecosystems and to support increasingly responsible and informed design decisions thanks to the analysis of sensitive parameters.

Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri, stated: “This partnership  with WSense further strengthens our ability to integrate cutting-edge technologies into maritime infrastructure projects. The application of IoUT represents a decisive step toward safer, smarter, and more sustainable ports. Through this agreement, we reinforce a shared vision that combines innovation, environmental protection, and national competitiveness.”

Chiara Petrioli, CEO of WSense, said: “This collaboration allows us to provide Fincantieri not only with our technologies, but also with our growing industrial capability in delivering underwater systems that are reliable, scalable, and ready for integration into major maritime infrastructures. Our IoUT platform is designed to operate in complex environments, supporting infrastructure management with continuous data and advanced tools for control, safety, and sustainability.”

The new agreement strengthens an already solid relationship between Fincantieri and WSense. In April, the Group formalized its participation in an investment in the scale-up, subscribing to a convertible loan of 2.5 million euros, with with an option to extend it by an additional €2.5 million. The collaboration, initiated with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on December 2023, had already delivered concrete results, including the awarding of three tenders from the National Underwater Dimension Hub, aimed at developing advanced underwater communication solutions.
