Today at Fincantieri’s shipyard at Ancona there was the launch of the “Superstar”, the new generation, high performance cruise ferry ordered by the Estonian owner Tallink, one of the most important operators in the Baltic Sea. Tallink runs regular service lines, mini-cruises and cargo transport along the main routes between Estonia and Sweden and Finland.
Present at the ceremony were the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador for Estonia in Italy, Andreas Tomasberg, the Mayor of Ancona, Fabio Sturani, the Head of Fincantieri’s Merchant Ship Business Unit, Enrico Buschi, and the Chairman of Tallink, Enn Pant.
Godmother to the ship was Kaia Kanepi, a highly successful tennis player in Estonia.

At 175 metres long and 27 metres wide, the ship, which is due for delivery in early 2008, has a gross tonnage of 36,000 tonnes, a loading capacity of 5,000 tonnes and a draught of 7 metres. Drwaing on an installed propulsion power of 50,400 kW the ferry will be able to reach a speed of approximately 28 knots. Fitted with over 240 cabins, when the ship enters service she will have a passenger capacity of 2,080 and a crew of 120.

The “Superstar”, which will operate on the Helsinki-Tallink route, has been built not only with a view to ensuring the functional qualities and operational flexibility required for regular shipping lines, but will also be fitted out to enhance the passenger’s stay on board: 9,000 square metres of public areas, a theatre, a show-lounge, shops, an à la carte restaurant, two self-services and a number of bars. In addition she will also have a fully equipped business room for passengers who need to work during the voyage.

Ancona shipyard will sooner begin the construction of a super-luxury cruise ship for the Italian owner, SilverSea. The yard will thus become the Group’s fourth centre, alongside Monfalcone, Marghera and Genoa-Sestri Ponente, tasked with cruise ship construction.
