Fincantieri and Carnival Corporation & plc Group have reached an agreement to build a cruise ship of 83,000 gross tonnes for the British shipowner Cunard Line.

The Company will invest 390 million Euro in the new ship which will be built at Marghera shipyard to enter service in January 2007.

The design of the new ship will be developed on the basis of that of the “Queen Victoria” -currently under construction at Marghera, due for delivery in the Spring of 2005 – which, under the new name “Arcadia”, will be transferred from the Cunard Line brand to P&O Cruises (another brand of P&O Princess Cruises International division, Carnival Group).

Fincantieri thus added another prestigious brand to its customer portfolio.

The “new Queen Victoria” will have a passenger capacity of 1,850 and will be the natural development of the ocean liner concept consistent with the tradition of Cunard. She will include more luxury and mini suites and will feature more classic culinary experiences including an upscale alternative restaurant.

Commenting on the new order, Giuseppe Bono, Chief Executive Officer of Fincantieri, said: “We are most grateful to the Carnival Group for once again choosing us, further strengthening our business relationship, which, in the last 15 years has led to the construction of 28 ships. In the course of this relationship we have provided highly flexible design capability, which have enabled us to build ships in accordance with the specific requirements of each cruise line”.
Mr. Bono added: “This new order, which brings to nine the number of ships in our order book, affirms the leadership of Fincantieri in the cruise shipbuilding sector with a share of about 50% of the world market”.
