Today, the Board of Directors of Fincantieri met to examine the course of business for the first six months of 2004, the results of which confirm the expected positive trend.

Indeed, despite the continuing economic downturn and consequent uncertainty as to when the world economy will recover, the shipbuilding industry has continued to be active, as already noted last year, with an increase in demand in virtually all its sectors. Fincantieri has succeeded in exploiting the opportunities available and in consolidating the company’s leading position in its reference markets.

Results for the group on 30th June 2004 show a net profit of €49.4 million compared to €41.4 million for the same period the previous year (+19.3%).

Production value, which stands at €1,097 million, is in line with the first six months of 2003, as is the gross operating margin, up from 8.9% to 9.1%.

The operating result, at €74.6 million, confirms a growth trend over the same period in 2003, when it amounted to €65.6 million (+13.7%).

Moreover, there has been a further, substantial improvement in the net financial position; this positive balance reflects the shipbuilder’s punctuality in respecting building schedules, which this year comprise the delivery of four cruise ships.

Fincantieri’s order book amounts to approximately €6 billion with twenty six ships currently under construction at the company’s eight shipyards, including the aircraft carrier, the “Cavour” launched on 20th July this year.
