Today, at Fincantieri’s shipyard at Monfalcone, there was the handover ceremony for the passenger ship, the “Caribbean Princess”, ordered by P&O Princess Cruises, one of the leading companies in the cruise industry (part of Carnival Corporation & plc).
Fincantieri was represented by its Chairman, Corrado Antonini, its Deputy Chairman, Roberto Tana, and its Chief Executive Officer, Giuseppe Bono, while Princess Cruises was represented by its Chief Executive Officer, Peter Ratcliffe, and Carnival Group by its Chairman and CEO, Micky Arison.
As her sister ship which will also be built at Monfalcone and to be delivered mid 2006, the “Caribbean Princess” is a development of the ships of the “Grand Class” series (the “Grand Princess”, “Golden Princess” and “Star Princess”, 109,000 gt, delivered in 1998, 2001 and 2002 respectively). However, cutting edge design solutions and innovative production technologies have made it possible to add a further passenger deck, thereby gaining around 255 extra cabins, corresponding to an increase of passenger capacity of about 20%.
Furthermore, the last 2 of the ship’s 17 decks have been built entirely of light alloy (for a total of about 1.100 t). Such a solution has allowed to lower the baricentre by reducing the weight of the upper decks and to limit the draft of the vessel to 8.45 metres.
The “Caribbean Princess”, which was launched last July, is the largest cruise ship built to date by Fincantieri: at 116,000 gross tonnes, 6,750 deadweight tonnes, 290 metres long, 36 wide, 67 high, the ship can travel at a maximum speed of 23 knots and cater for a maximum of about 3,600 passengers in 1,557 cabins, as well as 1,205 crew members.
The ship is well and truly a floating luxury hotel, with a wide range of entertainment on board, including theatres, swimming pools, boutiques, a fitness centre, a library, a casinò and a spectacular discotheque suspended high above the stern from which, at a height of over forty metres over the sea, the view is breathtaking.
Before the “Caribbean Princess” Fincantieri has built for Princess Cruises at Monfalcone shipyard, in addition to the vessels in the “Grand Class” series, the “Sun Princess”, the “Dawn Princess”, the “Sea Princess” and the “Ocean Princess” (all 77,000 gt), the “Crown Princess” and the “Regal Princess” (both 70,000 gt).
Fincantieri is the world leader in cruise shipbuilding with a market share of 47%.
