Fincantieri has gained an order from the Norwegian owner OVDS to build a new ship for delivery in Spring 2007. This contract is worth approximately 70 million euros.
The ship embodies special features and has been designed for summer cruises in Greenland and winter sailing on the Hurtigruten or Coastal Express route which has operated for over a century along the Western coasts of Norway.
Designed and built to Ice Class specifications to achieve high levels of strength, the vessel will be able to sail safely in icy, polar waters.
The new ship will have a gross tonnage of approximately 12,000 tonnes and a length of 110 metres, with a beam of 20 meters. There will be 200 cabins (60 for the crew) to accommodate a total of 500 passengers. The ship will have four refrigerated holds, a capacity for 200 pallets and a garage for twenty five vehicles.
Commenting on the new order, Fincantieri’s Chief Executive Officer, Giuseppe Bono said: “Through this order, from a prestigious owner, and gained against strong competition, Fincantieri further consolidates its role as the reference builder for the leading operators in North Europe” .
