Today at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Palermo there was the launch of the car-carrier Neptune Thelisis”, which was ordered, together with her sister ship “Neptune Okeanis”, by the Greek ship owning company, Neptune Lines, in October 2003. The “Neptune Okeanis” was also built in Palermo and entered service in July this year. Delivery of the “Neptune Thelisis” is scheduled within 2005.
The ceremony was attended by the owner, Nikos Travlos, and, representing Fincantieri, the Director of the Newbuilding Unit of the Shipyard, Roberto Olivari. Godmother to the vessel was Maria Travlos, the owner’s wife.
Fincantieri’s innovative design makes it possible to exploit to the maximum the ship’s volume in respect of her size, enabling her to transport up to 2,000 vehicles (or, alternatively, 1,750 lane metres of trailers and approximately 1,000 vehicles) on board a highly flexible, technically reliable vessel.
Moreover, the ship’s design meets to the highest quality levels of transport required by the owner in order to satisfy the main car manufacturers in respect of the safety standards laid down by the most rigorous international regulations.
The main features of the “Neptune Thelisis” are: 27,500 gross tonnes, 6,200 tonnes deadweight, maximum length 165 metres, breadth 26.2 metres, height to the upper deck 14.30 metres, draught 6.65 metres. The ships will be equipped with two Wartsila 6L46C engines capable of providing a total power of 12,600 kW and a service speed of 20.5 knots.
