Today at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Castellammare di Stabia there was the launch of the ro-pax ferry “Finnstar”, under construction for the Finnish shipping company, Finnlines.
A leading European ship owner, Finnlines works mainly in North Europe and the Baltic Sea; as well as its traditional shipping activities (carried out by its fleet of 70 ships), the company also works in the field of port services (management of terminals, cargo handling etc).
Present at the ceremony was Antti Lagerroos, President and Chief Executive Officer of Finnlines, welcomed by the top management of Fincantieri. Mrs Heli-Maija Laine, wife of the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Finnlines, acted as godmother to the ship.
“Finnstar” is the first of five sister ships ordered from Fincantieri in 2004. Initially the contract provided for the construction of three ships with an option for a further two vessels, then successively confirmed at the end of 2004, for an overall value of 500 million euros.
Two ships are currently under construction at Castellammare di Stabia and three at Ancona.
Fincantieri’s innovative project will afford operational flexibility and high technical reliability, thus making it possible to fully exploit the loading capacity of these ferries which will be able to carry up to 500 passengers and 300 trucks in 4,200 lane metres: record figures for ships of this type, which will be the largest and fastest ro-pax vessels ever built in the world.
The main features of the ships are: 42,000 gross tonnes, a deadweight of 9,300 tons, length overall 218 metres, beam 30.5 metres, height to the upper deck 16 metres and a draught of approximately 7 metres, with 246 cabins (201 for passengers). The ships will be equipped with four Wartsila 9L46D engines, capable of providing a total power of 48,000 kW and a service speed of 25 knots.
Fincantieri, through its operations carried out by the Merchant Ship Business Unit, which can draw on a staff of almost 2,000, a design centre which is the largest in Europe and shipyards at Ancona, Palermo and Castellammare di Stabia – is world leader in the field of large cargo-passenger ferries with nine vessels currently on its order book.
