Today at Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard there was the delivery ceremony for the cruise ship “Carnival Freedom”, ordered by the world’s leading cruise operator, Carnival Group, for the brand Carnival Cruise Lines.
Present at the ceremony, representing the Government, was the Vice Minister of Transport Cesare de Piccoli. Fincantieri was represented by its Chief Executive Officer, Giuseppe Bono, and Carnival Cruise Lines was represented by its Executive Vice President, Roberto Martinoli, who is responsible for operations.
The “Carnival Freedom” is the fifth sister ship of the “Carnival Conquest” evolved from the highly successful design of the “Carnival Destiny” - delivered in 1996 - from which a further 15 vessels were developed. The original “Destiny” design was first extended by adding half a deck of cabins at the fore, then the ship was lengthened by 15 metres, and, finally she was specifically tailored to the different brands of Carnival Corporation.
The 110,200-ton, 18-deck ship, which is 295 metres long, 38 metres wide and 64 metres high, will have a cruising speed of almost 20 knots and a passenger capacity of 4,914 (3,734 guests and 1,182 crew) accommodated in 2,121 cabins.
On board there is a 1,500-seat theatre, 5 swimming pools (one with a retractable roof), 4 restaurants, 22 bars, a casinò, a discotheque, an internet café, a children’s play area, shops, a fitness area, a jogging track and a volley and basketball court.
The order book of Marghera shipyard currently comprises ships for three different brands in the Carnival Group: the “Queen Victoria”, 90,000 tonnes, for Cunard Line, which will take up service at the end of 2007; the “Eurodam”, 86,000 tonnes, which is the prototype of the “Signature” class, for Holland America Line, due for delivery in summer 2008 and two 92,700-ton ships for Costa Crociere, delivery due in spring 2009 and 2010.
Since 1990 Fincantieri has delivered a total of 39 cruise ships, of which 37 for the main brands in Carnival Group. At the shipyards of Monfalcone, Sestri Ponente and Muggiano there are 14 ships for the US owner currently under construction or on which work is about to begin within 2011.
These 53 vessels have brought Fincantieri revenues amounting to approximately 22 billion dollars – calculated at today’s value - thereby making a substantial contribution, in terms of net exports, to the Italian balance of trade.
