Today at Fincantieri’s Venice-Marghera shipyard there was the ceremony to launch the cruise ship “Queen Victoria”, ordered by Carnival Group for its British brand, Cunard Line. The ship will be delivered at the end of 2007.
Present at the ceremony were Carol Marlow, President and Managing Director of Cunard Line, and, representing Fincantieri, the Chairman Corrado Antonini, the General Manager of the Merchant Ship Business Unit, Enrico Buschi, and the director of Marghera shipyard, Paolo Capobianco.
Godmother to the “Queen Victoria” was Maureen Ryan, who has worked for Cunard since 1963, and the only member of the company who has served on all the “Queens” in the fleet: the “Queen Mary”, the “Queen Elizabeth”, the Queen Elizabeth 2” and the “Queen Mary 2”.
295 metres long and with a gross tonnage of around 90,000, the “Queen Victoria” is one of the largest panamax (i.e. capable of passing through the Panama Canal) ships ever built. With 1,007 cabins – including a high proportion of luxury suites and mini suites – of which 864 with a sea view, and the majority with an external balcony, the ship is the natural evolution of the concept of the ocean liner following Cunard’s long-standing tradition.
The “Queen Victoria”, which will have a passenger capacity of 2,000 and a crew of 900, is the second largest passenger ship ever to be built for this owner and will lead to a 40% increase in the passenger capacity of the high prestige Cunard fleet whose history dates back 167 years.
In addition to the “Queen Victoria” the order book of Marghera shipyard also includes the construction of a further four ships for 3 different brands in the Carnival Group: the 110,00-ton Carnival Freedom for Carnival Cruise lines, due for delivery at the end of next month, the 86,000-ton Eurodam (prototype of the “Signature” class) for Holland America Line, due for delivery in summer 2008 (the owner also has an option for a sister ship) and two 92,700-ton ships for Costa Crociere, due for delivery in spring 2009 and 2010.
Since 1990 Fincantieri, world leader in the sector, has built 38 cruise ships, 36 of which for Carnival Group. There are 15 ships currently under construction or about to be built within 2011 at the shipyards of Monfalcone, Marghera and Sestri Ponente for the main brands of Carnival group (Carnival Cruise Lines, Costa Crociere, Holland America Line, Princess, Cunard and P&O Cruises). These 53 ships have brought Fincantieri revenue – calculated at today’s value – of approximately 22 billion dollars, thereby making a substantial contribution, in terms of net exports, to the Italian balance of trade.
