Today at Castellammare di Stabia shipyard there was the launch of the “Cruise Barcelona”, one of four ferries ordered from Fincantieri by Grimaldi Group, Naples, world leader in short sea shipping.
Present at the ceremony were the Mayor of Castellammare, Salvatore Vozza, and, representing Grimaldi, the Managing Director, Gianluca Grimaldi. Fincantieri was represented by Giuseppe Bono, the Group’s Chief Executive Officer. Godmother to the ship was Mrs Cristina Grimaldi.
The “Cruise Barcelona”, with a gross tonnage of 55,000 tonnes and a loading capacity of 3,000 line metres for trailers, is 225 metres long and 30.40 wide. The vessel will have 478 cabins and a capacity for 2,300 passengers and 215 vehicles. The maximum speed will be 28 knots. Two large stern hatches and interior ramps will ensure easy of access whilst manoeuvring on board will be facilitated by large garages.
The ship has been conceived to satisfy both sophisticated customers with an eye for detail who require top levels of comfort and passengers who seek a more dynamic life on board.
Indeed the ship will be fitted out to the same high standards of cruise ships, both in terms of cabin furnishings - with 19 suites, 50 junior suites and 400 standard cabins – and in terms of the wide range of entertainment on board: extensive areas for wellness, fitness, a solarium, a swimming pool and hydromassage pool, with other zones devoted to self-service or à la carte restaurants.
The ship, which incorporates cutting edge technologies to ensure it is environmentally friendly, also has a plant for the separate collection of solid and semi-solid waste.
The “Cruise Barcelona” and her sister ships, including the “Cruise Roma”, shortly due for delivery, will be considered among the most innovative, modern ships built for the sector. Thanks to close collaboration between Grimaldi Group and Fincantieri staff, these cruise ferries bring together comfort in furnishings and interior decoration alongside innovative solutions in terms of safety and hydrodynamics.
Fincantieri, leading operator in the ferry sector for vessels of over 150 metres for the transport of passengers and goods, in recent years has built 25 ships for 9 customers of 6 different nationalities. Following the “Cruise Barcelona”, Fincantieri will build a further two vessels for Grimaldi Group Naples. A total of 28 ships have been ordered by companies in Grimaldi Group from Fincantieri of which over a third have been, or will be, built at Castellammare di Stabia shipyard.
