Today, at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Monfalcone, there was the technical launch of the liner “Queen Elizabeth”, which will be delivered next autumn to Cunard Line, a brand of the Carnival Group. Following the “Queen Victoria”, delivered in Marghera in 2007, the “Queen Elizabeth” - which has been called by many “the ship of the year” – is the first unit built by the Monfalcone shipyard for Cunard, as well as the second “Queen” to be delivered by Fincantieri to the famous British brand.
Cunard Line is the symbol of British tradition and classical style, with a long history dating back to 1840. This year the company is celebrating its 170° anniversary and can boast a glorious tradition with some ocean liners that will last in our collective imagination.
Madrina of the launch was Mrs Florence Dennie Farmer, whose husband, Willie Farmer, served Cunard as Chief Engineer since 1963. He is the only one who served the company on both Queens of the fleet. Present at the ceremony were Peter Shanks, President and Managing Director of Cunard Line and, representing Fincantieri, Paolo Capobianco, head of Monfalcone shipyard.
Following an ancient maritime tradition, before the launch, took place the traditional “Coin Ceremony”. In order to celebrate the importance of the “Queen Elizabeth”, not one but three coins were welded. An half crown dated 1938, to mark the year of the first “Queen Elizabeth”. A sovereign dated 1967, year of the Queen Elizabeth 2. And a sovereign dated 2010, year of our newest “Queen Elizabeth”.
The “Queen Elizabeth” is approximately 294 metres long and has a gross tonnage of 90,400 tonnes. She is the second largest ship ordered to date by the owner, after the “Queen Mary 2”, and is one of the largest panamax vessels, i.e. able to sail through the Panama canal. The new ship, as the “Queen Victoria” which preceded her, is the natural development of the concept of the “ocean liner” in the style and tradition of Cunard. The “Queen Elizabeth” has a large number of luxury suites and mini suites and her 1,046 cabins can accommodate over 2,500 guests assisted by a crew of 1,097. During fitting out particular attention will be given to selecting materials and fine details.
With the launch of the “Queen Elizabeth” today, Fincantieri pursues its prestigious collaboration with the British market, for which, during the past years, 16 awesome ships were delivered.
Since 1990 Fincantieri has delivered 51 cruise ships, of which 47 for the six main brands in Carnival Group. A further 12 ships will be built in Fincantieri’s shipyards within 2012.
