Our Commitment to an Ethical and Sustainable Future
At Fincantieri, we believe that technology should serve humanity and foster shared progress. In this perspective, artificial intelligence represents a significant opportunity for responsible innovation, improvement of our processes, and the creation of sustainable value for all our stakeholders.
At the same time, due to its unique features and potential, AI demands a conscious governance approach, rooted in strong ethical principles. For this reason, we have adopted the Ethical AI Policy, a document that reflects our core values and incorporates the highest ethical, regulatory, and social standards, in line with the principles of the OECD, the G7, UNESCO, and the new European AI Act.
Through the Policy, we aim to:
• Ensure that all AI-based applications, processes, and systems are developed, implemented, and managed in accordance with the highest ethical, regulatory, and social standards
• Guarantee a transparentdeployment of AI, clearly communicating its purposes, operational methods, and potential impacts
• Prevent all forms of discrimination or bias, promoting fair, impartial, and human rights–respecting decisions
• Identify and mitigaterisks associated with the use of AI, particularly those related to system security, physical safety, and the prevention of malicious use of technologies
• Promote AI solutions that align with long-term sustainable development goals
Our Approach to Governance
The management of artificial intelligence at Fincantieri is grounded in structured governance, a concrete commitment to transparency, and a corporate culture deeply oriented towards responsibility.
We have established an AI Ethics Committee with supervisory, advisory, and control responsibilities. The Committee oversees the introduction and evolution of intelligent technologies, assesses their risks, and ensures their full alignment with our ethical principles and the fundamental rights of individuals.
Our guidang principles
We lead innovation through the Ethics by Design approach, systematically integrating ethical principles from the earliest stages of design of our technological solutions. In doing so, we ensure that the adoption of AI always complies with human rights, transparency, inclusiveness, and privacy protection.
We rigorously apply the Human-in-the-Loop principle, ensuring that human oversight is always present in critical automated decision-making. Active monitoring, real-time intervention, and continuous improvement allow us to maintain ethical and technical control over our technologies.
In designing and implementing AI systems, we are committed to six fundamental ethical principles:
• AI Risk-Based Classification: We assess each system based on its risk level, applying proportionate control and mitigation measures
• Data & Security Governance: We manage data securely, responsibly, and in compliance with the GDPR, adopting a "security-by-design" approach to ensure system integrity and resilience
• Algo-Fairness: We monitor and correct algorithmic biases to ensure fairness, impartiality, and inclusion in every automated decision
• Transparency & Explainability: We ensure that AI decisions are explainable, traceable, and understandable for all users involved
• Accountability & Human Oversight: We promote responsible AI use, with control mechanisms that allow for the identification of responsible parties and the correction of any anomalies
• Privacy Protection: We safeguard personal data confidentiality through secure, transparent systems compliant with applicable regulations
Our driver
For us, innovation means improving people’s lives, respecting the environment, and enhancing human capital. To this end, we promote:
• Continuous training, to raise internal awareness on ethics and AI-related topics
• Transparent communication, to strengthen trust between us and our stakeholders
• Sustainable innovation, to develop intelligent solutions with a positive and lasting impact
We are committed every day to integrating ethics, responsibility, and technology into a single path of growth—one that positions us as key players in building a more equitable, secure, and human-centered future.
Our initiatives
In 2024, we established the Digital Lab, a Group-level center of excellence with a strategic focus on Artificial Intelligence.
Several initiatives have been launched within Fincantieri to identify areas where this new technology can deliver the greatest benefits. Among these, the development of dedicated solutions in the field of naval engineering—one of the Group’s core business areas—stands out.
AI is not limited to internal processes at Fincantieri but will also be integrated into our products. A first tangible example is the incorporation of AI functionalities in our Omega360 full digital radar, a 4D software-defined radar system, characterized by fast installation and operational deployment, capable of adapting to various scenarios through specialized software classification algorithms.
