During the “Seatrade Cruise Shipping Convention” – the internationally acclaimed cruise fair now underway in Miami - Fincantieri announced it has reached agreements with Oceania Cruises and Silversea Cruises to build 5 ships (of which 2 options).
The agreement with Oceania, a U.S. owner, comprises the construction of two 65,000-ton cruise ships, each worth approximately 500 million dollars, for delivery in fall 2010 and summer 2011; the deal also includes an option for a third ship to be delivered in 2012. Details of the contract and financing will be defined at a later date.
Founded in 2002 by Frank Del Rio and Joe Watters, Oceania Cruises currently has a fleet of three, smaller ships (approximately 30,000 gross tonnes).
The new 9-deck ships will be 251 metres long and 32 metres wide and will reach a cruising speed of 22 knots. They will be able to accommodate 1,280 passengers in 640 cabins and suites, most of which (93%) with a panorama sea view. In addition, 83% of passenger accommodation will have a spacious private balcony. The ships will be exquisitely appointed with the focus on passenger comfort. The overall design was developed by Yran & Storbratten Studio.
Silversea, a leading Italian operator in top luxury cruises, has signed an agreement with Fincantieri for a 36,000-ton cruise ship with a passenger capacity of 540 for delivery in early 2009; there is also an option for a sister ship.
Silversea currently has a fleet of 4 ships: Silver Cloud, Silver Wind, Silver Shadow, and Silver Whisper.
Through the orders Fincantieri has added 2 new, important brands to its cruise customer portfolio.
Commenting on the agreement, Fincantieri’s Chief Executive Officer, Giuseppe Bono, said: «We are most pleased with the new orders. In addition to proving it is world leader in the cruise sector, Fincantieri, drawing on the expertise and experience the company has built up over the years, is now entering the promising market of luxury, medium-sized ships. Thanks to these projects we have further expanded our product range, which now covers the full array of the market – from mega yachts of over 70 metres to cruise of over 130,000 tonnes».
