Fincantieri and the American shipowner Carnival Corporation & plc have reached an agreement to build a new 116,000-ton cruise ship worth 535 million euros, for the British brand P&O Cruises. The vessel, which externally will be similar to P&O Cruises "Ventura" (which is scheduled to enter service in spring 2008), will have a passenger capacity of 3,100 and will also be built at Monfalcone shipyard with delivery scheduled in spring 2010.
Since 1990 Fincantieri has built 38 cruise ships, of which 36 for the Carnival Group. Counting the ship included in today’s agreement, there are currently 15 vessels under construction or about to be built by 2011 at the shipyards of Monfalcone, Marghera and Sestri Ponente for the main brands of Carnival group (Carnival Cruise Lines, Costa Crociere, Holland America Line, Princess, Cunard Line and P&O Cruises).
These 53 ships have brought Fincantieri revenue of approximately 22 billion dollars – calculated at today’s rates – and made a substantial contribution, in terms of net exports, to the Italian balance of trade.
Commenting on the agreement Fincantieri’s Chief Executive Officer, Giuseppe Bono, said: “Our relationship with Carnival, the world’s leading cruise operator, continues to grow at an incredible pace; in 2006 Fincantieri and Carnival signed contracts for 8 ships, for a total value of nearly 3.5 billion euros. The new year has started out with the allocation of this ship which is a clear signal that cooperation between our two companies will get stronger in the future too, thereby enabling both of us to consolidate our positions as market leaders”.
