Today at Ancona shipyard there was the ceremony to mark the cutting of the first sheeting of the new super-luxury cruise ship which Fincantieri is building for the Italian owner SilverSea. The event marks the official commencement of construction work.
Present at the ceremony representing the owner was the Chairman, Manfredi Lefebvre, and the President, Amerigo Perasso. Fincantieri was represented by the Director of the shipyard Mauro Leboffe and the General Manager Merchant Ships, Enrico Buschi.
SilverSea is one of the leading operators in the super-luxury cruise business sector and currently boasts a fleet of five ships.
The 36,000-tonne ship, which will be built at Ancona for delivery at the end of 2009, will be 195.8 metres long and 26.50 wide and able to reach a speed of 20.3 knots. Her passenger capacity will be 540 guests, with a crew of 378. All 270 passenger cabins will have a sea view, and 222 cabins, in addition to the ship’s 34 suites, will have a spacious private balcony. The cabins and suites will also all have light, airy living areas and be provided with every comfort.
Conceived to meet the highly demanding tastes of the European market the decor of the cabins and suites will be highly sophisticated with carefully chosen materials.
Thanks to this construction Ancona shipyard, which is currently also engaged in fitting out the cruise ferry “Superstar” for the Estonian owner Tallink, has become the fourth centre in the Group, alongside the shipyards at Monfalcone, Marghera and Genoa-Sestri Ponente, devoted to this type of vessel. The agreement to build the vessel for SilverSea, signed last March in Miami, also includes an option for a second sister ship, and marks Fincantieri’s entrance into the promising market segment of medium-sized luxury vessels.
