Officially constituted Seastema S.p.A., the new company set up under the equally owned joint venture between Fincantieri and ABB. Headquartered in Genoa with a second unit in Lucca, Seastema, draws on the wealth of experience and leading edge technological know-how of the two founding companies. Company Chairman is Giuseppe Di Marco, Chief Executive Officer Giuseppe Sassi and General Manager Michele Maresca.
Seastema is the outcome of a strategic decision taken by Fincantieri and ABB, both leaders in their respective markets, to further strengthen their position on world markets by designing, developing and building marine automation systems for different applications: naval, cruise, ferries and mega yachts.
Technological excellence in the marine field - now pooled by ABB and Fincantieri in Seastema - will be the basis to create solutions for automation which can control all the ship’s vital functions and guarantee high performance levels and operational efficiency, with attention especially on controlling maintenance and running costs and reducing environmental impact. This approach, which is innovative in the marine field, will also give shipyards and shipowners the opportunity to develop the design using technologically advanced solutions to optimise construction activities and meet requirements for operational efficiency at the highest levels.
“We set out to provide added value by integrating the automation system with the ship components which are created and directly designed with the ship itself. By studying new ships and basing their characteristics on the functionalities that a modern, advanced system can guarantee, we create value both in terms of design and economic return”, commented the head of the Process Automation division of ABB Italy, Giuseppe Di Marco.
Alberto Maestrini, head of Fincantieri’s Naval Vessels Business Unit, added: “The approach which led to Seastema being set up responds to a wish to design a ship around its automation, thereby guaranteeing the same high degree of innovation as in other industrial applications. The reference market for our products will be ships built by Fincantieri and by other yards both in Italy and abroad.”.
