Trieste, February 28, 2018 – Fincantieri signed a cooperation protocol with the Liguria Region and the trade unions Cgil, Cisl and Uil, aimed at carrying out a series of initiatives to encourage job placement processes, stimulate local employment, especially youth employment, thus contributing to the social and economic development of the regional territory.
The signing took place today at the headquarter of the Liguria Region between Giuseppe Bono, Chief Executive Officer of the shipbuilding group, Giovanni Toti, President of the Liguria region, and the secretaries of the three trade unions, Federico Vesigna (Cgil), Luca Maestripieri (Cisl) and Mario Ghini (Uil).
The company, the Region and the trade unions will work in close coooperation on matters of mutual interest in order to: enhance information and communication activities on employment initiatives and opportunities, both for workers and for the companies operating in the shipbuilding sector, particularly those at the Sestri Ponente, Riva Trigoso and Muggiano yards; increase employment opportunities and encourage entry processes into the job market, especially for young people; identify the most effective and opportune ways to fulfil the requirements under the special laws in favor of the most vulnerable workers; foster the best possible match between training needs and offer and the development of vocational education and training careers consistent with the areas which are strongly connected to the production system; promote employment quality by offering a specific service to the local communities and taking into account the needs of the ever-changing labor market.
Specifically, the cooperation will call for, among other activities, the opening of a window of the Employment Center at the Sestri Ponente, Riva Trigoso and Muggiano yards, the promotion of internships within the company and the subcontractors, as well as orientation initiatives. In order to ensure the effectiveness of the activities detailed in the protocol, a joint working group will also be set up. It will consist of representatives for each of the signatory parties and, when deemed necessary, it will be open to players of training organizations, schools, universities and technical-professional centers of the region.
Giuseppe Bono, CEO of Fincantieri, stated: “Liguria is one of the areas in which we are most present, being without doubt the first industry of the region, and for this reason the action set out today is an important starting point for the local authorities, trade associations and the company. We have to work jointly in order to achieve the common goal of a stable, lawful and qualified employment, a real driver for the growth of the community and the areas. In fact, the competitive scenario in which we operate every day demands specific and appropriate professional skills, and an increasingly closer connection between the supply and demand within the labor market. The agreement reached today provides for recognizing these requirements”.
“The agreement signed today – commented Giovanni Toti, President of the Liguria Region – is the result of a strategy built in more than a year of confrontation with the company. It is among the first in Italy: at a time in which too many words are spent, Liguria has already moved from words to deeds. Add to this, the outlook for the seaward expansion, which has to proceed rapidly, but also broaden its original goals. After so many years in which Fincantieri’s presence on the territory has sometimes been questioned, today it is confirmed and consolidated with this agreement, increasing in relevance in the coming months and years. We are convinced that a coordination table between the company, the Region and the trade unions can not only create concrete work opportunities for many Ligurians, but also help define a cooperation approach, which could also be applied in other situations: the opening of an employment window within the yards and therefore a joint screening with the company’s management of the curricula, the identification of the most useful professional profiles to create jobs, an important training plan which allows to give the necessary expertise which Fincantieri needs in its facilities, giving employment to young and old people in our area”.
