The ships of the Vulcano Class (Vulcano and Atlante) are Logistic Support Ship (LSS) combining capacity to transport and transfer to other vessels both liquids (diesel fuel, jet fuel, fresh water) and solids (spare parts, food and ammunitions) using the four replenishment stations compliant to the NATO standards. The ship’s workshops ensure the capability to conduct repair and maintenance operations, both mechanical and electronic, on the equipments of other ships of the task group.

The ship is MARPOL compliant. The vessels have a strong dual capability thanks to:

• A medical area with a fully equipped hospital, including operating rooms, intensive care units, radiology and analysis rooms, dentist’s oice and hospital rooms capable of hosting up to 13 patients.
• A forward modular area able to host up to 16 ISO standard 20’ containers. The containers can be embarked and disembarked autonomously using the two forward 20 tons cranes.

The combat system has command and control capacity in tactical scenarios, communications, dissuasive non-lethal defense systems and small arms. The vessel is anyway fitted for embarking more complex combat system, becoming an intelligence and electronic warfare platform.
