At the Eurosatory defense and security exhibition in Paris, Fincantieri, one of the world’s largest and diversified shipbuilding groups, and REPUBLIKORP, Indonesia’s largest privately owned defense industrial holding company, through its subsidiary PT Republik Palindo Internasional (RPAL), announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishing a strategic partnership between the two groups.

The MoU, signed by Eugenio Santagata, General Manager Fincantieri Naval Vessels Division, and Norman Joesoef, group Chairman and Founder REPUBLIKORP on behalf of RPAL, provides for the creation of a joint venture, aimed at supporting Indonesia’s domestic shipbuilding capabilities and fostering a long-term industrial cooperation. The initiative represents a decisive step in enhancing Indonesia’s national mandate for defense self-reliance by leveraging Fincantieri’s industrial expertise.

The partnership focuses on the local construction of advanced naval vessels tailored specifically to Indonesia’s unique geographic and operational demands. The envisaged joint venture will support the development of solid domestic production capabilities, enabling the delivery of a range of platforms, including high-value LPDs/LHDs, multi-role frigates and corvettes for high-end naval deterrence, offshore patrol vessels for Exclusive Economic Zone enforcement, fast attack crafts, and submarines.

A key element of the agreement is a structured approach to the transfer of technology and know-how. Leveraging Fincantieri’s expertise, the initiative will support the development of local capabilities through engineering cooperation, training programs and the progressive strengthening of design, system integration and production competencies. By fostering a skilled workforce and supporting the development of local suppliers, the partnership aims to progressively integrate Indonesia into the global shipbuilding value chain. The MoU also provides for closer industrial and operational cooperation, contributing to the development of Indonesia’s naval capabilities.

Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri commented: “Building on our established cooperation with the Indonesian Navy, this MoU marks a further step in strengthening a long-term strategic partnership between Fincantieri and Indonesia. By leveraging our expertise in high-complex naval shipbuilding and system integration, we are committed to supporting the development of local industrial capabilities and contributing to a more resilient maritime ecosystem. At the same time, this initiative reflects our commitment to developing sustainable industrial capabilities in Indonesia.”

Exploring this partnership reflects our commitment to advancing Indonesia’s defense industry independence while building a strong and balanced international collaboration. Together with Fincantieri, we see an opportunity to strengthen Indonesia’s maritime capabilities, develop national talent, and contribute to a more resilient regional defense ecosystem,” said Norman Joesoef, Chairman of REPUBLIKORP Group.
