Andrea Doria is the first of the two units of the “Orizzonte” class commissioned to Fincantieri under a contract signed in October 2000 and will be joined, starting from 2010, by her sister ship Caio Duilio. On board, the most modern detection and weapon systems are installed, the result of cutting-edge international collaborations involving the Italian Defense industry, such as the “PAAMS” program (a joint Italian, British, and French project) for a medium-range anti-air missile system, and the “SLAT” program (an Italian-French collaboration) for anti-torpedo defense.
