KV Hopen is the third and final Jan Mayen-class Coast Guard vessel, built by VARD for the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency, completing the fleet after KV Jan Mayen and KV Bjørnøya.

Built in Romania and outfitted in Norway, he replaces the obsolete Nordkapp-class as part of a modernization project worth 7.2 billion Norwegian kroner (NOK).

Built for Arctic conditions, they feature ice-strengthened hulls, icebreaker class notation, and robust seakeeping qualities.
