The Multi-Mission Modular Vessel (MMMV) introduces a new approach to naval platform design: “one hull, many missions”: rather than building a vessel around a predefined mission, Fincantieri has developed a platform designed to receive and adapt to multiple missions. Through a highly flexible and open modular architecture, the vessel can accommodate different containerized payloads, allowing its configuration to be tailored to specific operational needs.

Fincantieri unveiled its new MMMV at Euronaval 2026 in Paris, presenting a new generation of highly adaptable, modular, multi-missions naval platforms, built today for the navies of tomorrow. Conceived as a software-designed vessel, the MMMV combines an open architecture with a highly physical platform, enabling capabilities and mission configurations to evolve in response to changing operational requirements. The vessel was presented by Eugenio Santagata, General Manager of the Fincantieri Naval Vessels Division.

Designed as a compact, low-crewed and highly versatile platform, the 50-meter vessel has a displacement of 500 tons and requires a core crew of just six people. It can accommodate 10 or 20-foot containerized mission modules, enabling rapid quayside reconfiguration across a broad spectrum of operational scenarios.

This architecture allows the platform to support missions ranging from maritime security, surveillance and law enforcement, including the fight against illicit trafficking and piracy, to intelligence gathering, underwater operations, communication intelligence, critical sea infrastructure protection, and combat missions.

The modular payloads can integrate a wide range of systems including loitering munitions, aerial and underwater drones, launch-and-recovery systems, and other mission-specific support modules. The MMMV is conceived not only as a highly flexible single platform, but also as a coordinated swarm, while retaining the ability to integrate and operate alongside a wider naval fleet. The vessel has also been designed from the outset to enable the progressive integration of front-edge defense and autonomous technologies and is already prepared for potential future unmanned operations.

Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri, commented: “Modern naval platforms must be conceived today for missions and technologies that will continue to evolve tomorrow. The Multi-Mission Modular Vessel embodies this vision, combining a highly flexible architecture with the ability to progressively integrate new capabilities throughout its operational life. For Fincantieri, modularity is not simply a design feature: it is a new paradigm, a strategic enabler that allows us to deliver platforms that continue to evolve, operationally effective and responsive to changing requirements over time.”
