Born in Fiuggi in 1962, he holds degrees in Political Science and in International Economics and Management.
He has over thirty years of experience in the fields of transportation, infrastructure, and business management.
He began his career in 1988 at Fiat Auto S.p.A., in the Marketing/Commercial Department.
In 1998, he joined the Italian State Railways Group (Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane), holding positions of increasing responsibility. From 2009 to 2017, he served as General Manager of the National and International High-Speed Passenger Division at Trenitalia, significantly contributing to positioning Italian High-Speed rail among the leading players in the European rail transport market.
During his tenure, he improved both the economic growth and industrial efficiency of the passenger traffic business, particularly High-Speed services, initiating a major corporate turnaround phase with positive and consolidated financial results.
In 2017, he was appointed CEO of FS Sistemi Urbani, a company focused on enhancing the Group’s real estate assets through urban regeneration projects in major Italian cities.
From July 2018 to May 2021, he served as CEO and General Manager of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane S.p.A. Under his leadership, the Group achieved some of the best financial performances in its history, with operating revenues exceeding EUR 12 billion in 2018 and an EBITDA of EUR 2.5 billion, positioning the company among the best in Europe. In 2019, the Group recorded a net profit of EUR 584 million, marking the best year in the company’s recent history.
During his mandate, he promoted the integration of various modes of transport, facilitating connections between railway stations, ports, and airports. He also played a key role in the agreement between Alitalia and Delta Air Lines aimed at creating a single industrial group.
Under his leadership, the FS Group expanded its international presence, exporting Italian know-how to over 60 countries.
He led the acquisition of major contracts in Europe and worldwide, including passenger service management in Germany, France, Greece, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, as well as infrastructure projects in India, Colombia, Peru, the United States, Egypt, and Ethiopia. This expansion strengthened FS Group’s position as a global leader in the transport and infrastructure sector.
From July 2017 to June 2020, he was National President of Federturismo Confindustria, representing tourism sector companies at national and international levels.
From 2019 to 2021, he was a member of the Management Committee of the Community of European Railways and Infrastructure Managers (CER) in Paris, contributing to European railway strategies.
From 2018 to 2021, he was a Member of the General Council of Confindustria Nazionale, later appointed to the Internal Executive Council in July 2020.
From April 2021 to July 2022, he served on the Board of Directors of Luiss Guido Carli University in Rome.
From October 2022 to October 2023, he was President of Holding Salus per Aquam, the parent company of the Fiuggi thermal baths and bottled water operations.
From January 2023 to May 2024, he was President of ATF S.p.A., the company managing the Fiuggi thermal baths and water bottling.
From March 2023 to June 2024, he was President of GO.WE S.r.l.
Since June 2022, he is a Board Member of Luiss Business School in Rome.
In academia, he has shared his managerial experience with several institutions, including Bocconi University in Milan, Luiss Guido Carli University in Rome, and La Sapienza University in Rome.
He is currently an Associate Professor at Luiss Business School, where he teaches Transport Management.
He is Vice President of the non-profit National Association Incontradonna, committed to breast cancer prevention.
He has received several national and international awards and recognitions for his managerial work.
In November 2019, he was appointed by the European Commission for Transport as a “European Ambassador for Diversity,” promoting inclusion strategies in the transport sector.
In May 2021, he was named “European Climate Ambassador” as part of the establishment of the “Climate Pact,” a platform promoted by the European Commission involving civil society and businesses in Green Deal initiatives.
Since 2010, he holds the title of Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
