Components that create a system

We design and manufacture marine systems and components with high technological content mainly used in the maritime sector, such as stabilization, propulsion, and positioning systems as well as cargo handling and offshore terminal systems.

We are a "system integrator" and propose turnkey solutions, also offering our customers after sales services.

We design custom solutions evaluating and respecting the needs of the designer and shipbuilder, providing the optimal solution for any complex project.

We have also designed and engineered shock resistant stabilization systems for military applications.

Route Control System (RCS): based on an integrated control system of the stern unit (interceptor) and fin stabilizers. These hydraulically operated devices maintain optimum platform trim and reduce accelerations due to pitch, roll and heave motions.

Rudder rolls product range

The frigates of the Italian-French FREMM program mount the rudder roll governance and stabilization system. This system both reduces rolling and keeps the ship on course. The system has special shock resistance qualities and a torque range of 50 - 500 kNm.

Positioning system

In this field, we supply the following components:

 •   Bow and stern thrusters

 •   Retractable and non-retractable azimuth thrusters

 •   Control systems

Fincantieri has developed two transverse thrusters:

 •   HMF type with fixed pitch propeller;

 •   HMC type with controllable pitch propeller.

These two configurations have the same high level of performance in that the propellers are made with very high precision machine tools.

Both types of propellers use a flexible coupling to connect the main engine to the transmission pinion. The bevel gear, consisting of pinion and crown, which transmits power to the propeller, is made with very high precision hardened teeth.

Features of tunnel thrusters:

 •   Suitable for cruise ships, ferries and all types of naval vessels

 •   Proven reliability and sturdiness on hundreds of ships operating worldwide.

 •   Impact resistance qualification, closing tunnel hatches for reduced underwater acoustic signature and to reduce the ship's forward motion resistance with consequent fuel savings.

 •   The new "hubless" type operating with a permanent-magnet motor is in the process of development and testing. This new type of propeller delivers unique noise and energy saving performance. These features are much appreciated especially on luxury pleasure boats.

Azimuth thrusters

The azimuth thrusters were developed according to the very strict standards of the naval and offshore sector.

The two ART (retractable) and AT (non-retractable) series can be used for dynamic positioning and for the main and auxiliary propulsion.

The retractable propellers can be quickly raised and lowered from inside/outside the ship. The ART model has been designed for inspection without the vessel needing to enter dock. This feature is made possible by a patented system that uses a mountable/removable cover to create an airtight chamber to repair or replace the propeller.

The non-retractable AT model comes with all the necessary equipment to be dismantled and replaced at sea with the help of specialist divers.

Mounting and alignment of the ART type inside the ship takes place through the provision of a welded steel structure customized and incorporated into the propeller. This simplifies the work of integration and interface with the hull at the construction site.
