With more than 7,000 ships built over its 230-year history, Fincantieri has built epoch-making ships in every era. The vessels built by the Group include undisputed global icons of the sea, such as the Amerigo Vespucci, the Italian Naval Academy training ship, and the transatlantic liner Rex, which held the “Blue Riband” record for the fastest transatlantic crossing of a passenger ship.
The path we have followed has led us to constantly grow and develop so that today, just like two centuries ago, our calling card is our intimate knowledge of the sea, a natural bond that makes us leaders in our field thanks to our courage to change, by bringing together tradition, experience and innovation.
The historic milestones
1780
The first modern Italian shipyard begins operating in Castellammare di Stabia.
1933
The transatlantic liner Rex wins the “Blue Riband” record for the fastest transatlantic crossing of a passenger ship.
1959
Fincantieri is founded as a State financial holding company to oversee the main Italian shipyards.
1984
Fincantieri became an operating company.
90's
The Company begins working with the cruise sector and deliveres its first cruise ship, the Crown Princess, to the Carnival Group.
1992
The Destriero set the as yet unbeaten record for the fastest transatlantic crossing without refueling.
1993-2001
Fincantieri focuses on the design and manufacture of high value-added products, such as cruise ships, ferries and naval vessels handing over the period 20 cruise ships, 16 ferries and building 18 naval vessels, of which 13 for the Italian Navy.
In 1998 the Company owns 8 shipyards and operates through two business units: merchant ships and naval vessels.
After 2005
The Group bolsters its growth strategy by diversifying its range into three new business areas:
Mega Yachts, with the creation of the “Fincantieri Yachts” line, specializing in the design and construction of large luxury yachts.
Ship Repair and Conversions, developing operations in converting and modifying vessels.
Systems and Components, with the aim of increasing operations as systems integrator in designing and building turnkey solutions and offering products to clients involved in both the naval sector and industry.
2006
Delivery of the first U212A submarine Todaro class.
2008/2013
Since 2008 the Group has continued with its strategy of global diversification:
- at the end of 2008 it acquires the Manitowoc Marine Group in the United States, now the Fincantieri Marine Group, thereby joining the United States defence market
- in 2009 the company Seastema S.p.A. is established, a joint venture with ABB, operating in the automation sector;
- in 2010 the company Etihad Ship Building LLC is founded, a joint venture to build and repair ships for Military Navies in the Middle East
- in 2011 an operations unit is created, providing logistic and after-sales support to meet the growing demand for such services
- in 2012 the Mega Yachts Business Unit delivers Serene, its first 134-meter mega yacht, which won the “World Superyacht Award”
- in 2013 it acquires the Norwegian group Vard, listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange, a global leader in the construction of high-end offshore and specialized vessels.

The Group was quoted on the Italian Stock Exchange.
The company Marine Interiors was created, specializing in the design, refitting and delivery of turnkey cabins.
2015
Two new company are established:
- Fincantieri SI, which designs, manufactures and supplies integrated and innovative systems in the field of electric, electronic and electromechanical industrial solutions.
- Fincantieri (Shanghai) trading Co. Ltd., its branch in China, to guarantee presence on the Chinese market.
