The patrol vessel “Corsi” delivered to the Coast Guard

07 February 2004

Today, at Muggiano (La Spezia) shipyard, there was the delivery of the patrol vessel “Corsi”, the last in a series of five vessels that the General Command of the Coast Guard ordered from Fincantieri in summer 2000.
Representing the Italian Government there was the Vice Minister of Infrastructures and Transport, Rt. Hon. Mario Tassone.
Also present at the ceremony were the Commander-in-Chief of the Coast Guard, Admiral Eugenio Sicurezza and the President of the Italian NATO Delegation, Sen. Giovanni Lorenzo Forcieri.
Fincantieri was represented by its Chief Executive Officer, Giuseppe Bono, the Deputy Chairman Roberto Tana and the Executive Vice President of the Naval Vessel Business Unit, Alberto Maestrini.
The vessel was blessed by the Head Chaplain of the Naval Department of the Upper Tyrrhenian, Mons. Valerio Tanchio and Mrs. Caterina Bonadio Tassone acted as godmother.
The “Corsi”, as her sister vessels which preceded her - the “Diciotti”, “Dattilo”, “Fiorillo” and “Peluso” – is the result of an intensive building programme; Fincantieri is well aware of the important contribution given to the Coast Guards by these vessels which are a development of the open sea patrol vessel, the “Saettìa”, also built at Muggiano shipyard and delivered in 1999.
The new vessels are 52 metres long and 8 metres wide, have a displacement at full load of 427 tonnes and a crew of 30; moreover they can reach high speeds - 32 knots - thanks to 4 diesel engines, each of 2,360 kW, which are produced by Isotta Fraschini Motori, a subsidiary of Fincantieri. They are tasked with carrying out open sea patrols, anti-pollution activities (cleaning up oil slicks, oil dispersion), assisting craft in difficulty and search and rescue operations.
