THE CRUISE SHIP “WESTERDAM” DELIVERED IN MARGHERA

Today at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Venice - Marghera there was the handover ceremony of the passenger ship “Westerdam”, ordered by Holland America Line, part of Carnival Corporation & plc, the leading group in the cruise market.
Representing Fincantieri for the occasion was the Chairman Corrado Antonini, the Deputy Chairman Roberto Tana and the Chief Executive Officer Giuseppe Bono; Holland America Line was represented Line by its President and Chief Operating Officer Stein Kruse.
The “Westerdam” is the third of four ships which Fincantieri is building for Holland America Line. The “Zuiderdam”, prototype in the “Vista” series, was delivered in November 2002, the “Oosterdam” in July 2003, whilst the last in the class will be delivered in early 2006.
The ships in the “Vista” class, at about 82,000 gross tonnes and 290 metres long can accommodate up to 3,200 people - 2,400 passengers and 800 crew – and has a cruising speed of 22 knots. The largest and the most advanced vessels in HAL’s fleet, they boast a particularly elegant dècor.
Features of these ships, for example, include innovative external lifts running along both sides of the vessel and spacious cabins fitted with every comfort, 85% of them external.
In May Marghera shipyard will launch the “Arcadia”, which is being built for P&O Cruises, another brand of the Carnival Group.
Over the course of almost fifteen years and including the “Westerdam”, Fincantieri has built twenty-nine ships for the various brands of Carnival, and between now and 2007 a further eight vessels will be built in the shipyards of Monfalcone, Marghera and Sestri Ponente for six different brands of the same group. In economic terms, this relationship has brought Fincantieri revenues of almost fourteen billion dollars.
