FINCANTIERI WILL COMPLETE AND OUTFIT “SCARABEO 8” FOR SAIPEM
12 June 2007
Saipem, a member of the Eni group, has asked Fincantieri to complete and fit out the drilling platform “Scarabeo 8”.
The work will be carried out at Palermo shipyard, thereby guaranteeing a full workload for the yard’s direct staff and good levels of employment in the related supply industry.
Due for delivery in summer 2009, the platform – which is self-propelling in transit at light loads - will be 120 metres long, 73 wide and 40 high with a submersion of approximately 23.5 metres when operating and a displacement of 54,000 tons. It will be made up of two hulls, six columns and a main deck where the drilling plant and platform services will be installed, including a superstructure for accommodation - 128 single cabins and service facilities - and other work areas for the crew and specialized technical staff working on board.
Built to operate in deep waters, even in adverse weather conditions, beyond the Arctic circle, the platform will be equipped with a dynamic positioning plant and a helicopter deck.
Commenting on the order, Giuseppe Bono, Fincantieri’s Chief Executive Officer said: “This order, which confirms Fincantieri’s high standing and cutting edge level of technological expertise, further strengthens our mission to build for the special vessels sector and marks our return to a business area of highly interesting potential. Indeed, in the years to come, the expected growth in demand for energy will be met by a corresponding increase in demand for newbuildings and a need to replace obsolete vessels.” Mr. Bono concluded: “I am sure that the Palermo shipyard will do an excellent job, given its considerable experience in the field of repairs and maintenance of offshore platforms”.
