THE “CRUISE ROMA” IS LAUNCHED AT CASTELLAMMARE DI STABIA
22 June 2007
Today at Castellammare di Stabia shipyard there was the launch of the “Cruise Roma”, a ferry ordered from Fincantieri by the ship owner Industria Armamento Meridionale (INARME), Grimaldi Group Naples, a world leader in short sea shipping. Delivery is scheduled for the end of the year.
Present at the ceremony were: the Mayor of Castellammare, Salvatore Vozza, the Managing Director of Grimaldi Compagnia di Navigazione, Gianluca Grimaldi, and, representing Fincantieri, Giorgio Rizzo, Vice Director of the Merchant Ships Business Unit. Godmother to the ship was Donna Paola Grimaldi, wife of Guido Grimaldi, Chairman of the Group.
At 55,000 gt the “Cruise Roma” will be the largest cruise ferry operating in the Mediterranean and will also be suitable for short cruises. 225 metres long and 30.40 metres wide, the ferry will have 3,000 lane metres available for trailers and 478 cabins and will be able to transport 2,300 passengers and 215 vehicles at a maximum speed of 27 knots. Easy boarding is ensured thanks to two large stern hatches and interior ramps while once on board ease of manoeuvring is ensured by extensive garage areas.
The ship features equipment for the control and prevention of the emission of pollutants into the sea and air, in accordance with the latest regulations for the sector, in addition to plant for the differential collection of solid and liquid waste.
In line with the latest trends in short sea shipping, the ferry will be fitted out to the same high standards as cruise ships, both in terms of cabin furnishings and the wide range of entertainment on board: extensive areas for wellness and fitness, a solarium, a swimming pool and hydro massage pool as well as self-service and à la carte restaurants.
The design is the result of close cooperation between Grimaldi Group Naples and Fincantieri’s technical and design staff, who, by studying a range of solutions, have succeeded in wedding the needs for capacity, comfort, safety and style together with excellent hydrodynamic characteristics which make this vessel one of the world’s most innovative, up-to-date cruise ferries.
Fincantieri, world leader in the sector for passenger and cargo ferries of over 150 metres, holds the record for having built 24 vessels for 9 operators of 6 different nationalities in recent years. With regard to Grimaldi Group Naples, following the “Cruise Roma”, Fincantieri will build a further three sister ships: the “Cruise Barcellona”, with delivery due in summer 2008 and two vessels which will be delivered in autumn 2009 and spring 2010 respectively. These ferries, together with the latest 5 RoRo pax built for Finnlines, mean that the Group has ordered a total of 28 ships from Fincantieri, a third of which have been or will be built at Castellammare di Stabia shipyard.
